Find the Right Golf Bag - Play Better Golf!

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Bill Wright asked:

In the past decade manufacturers have made considerable improvements in how golf bags are produced including the materials used and subsequent durability of those bags has increased substantially. The colours, styles and variations now available from golf retailers is truly mind-blowing - with many golf retailers now offering free personalisation on specific brands - players now have the opportunity to coordinate their entire golfing outfit from clothing to equipment.

Golf bags come in different guises from the Sunday / Pencil bag which is designed to hold a reduced number of golf clubs and golf equipment - ideal for a quick nine holes after work, these bags are constructed from lightweight materials and are not suitable for carrying a complete set of clubs.

The stand bag has perhaps witnessed the greatest degree of evolution in the past decade with many golfers now choosing to carry a full set of clubs - thanks to new lightweight nylon based materials and dual padded straps to distribute the weight evenly across the back and shoulders. Most stand bags now feature lightweight, retractable legs which are spring loaded and extend automatically when the bag is placed down. This process allows straightforward access to your golf clubs at a comfortable angle which is natural for the body.

The trolley or cart bag is typically larger than a carry or stand bag and is designed to carry a complete set of golf clubs - most trolley bags include 14 ‘graphite-friendly’ dividers to provide excellent protection in transit. Typically the largest of all golf bags - excluding the Tour bag - the trolley bag is designed for use with a push, pull or electric golf trolley. The trolley bag will also feature an array of pockets which can be accessed without removing the bag from the trolley. Like the stand bag - some trolley bags can be customised with a logo, text or both in your choice of colours - this provides the ultimate gift for any golf enthusiast and would make the perfect addition to a corporate golf day.

There are a number of features to look out for when purchasing a golf bag - these include amongst others:

-Divided Club Compartments to help arrange and organise your set of golf clubs - modern trolley bags feature graphite friendly dividers to protect delicate graphite shafts.

- External putter holder for convenient access.

- External umbrella holder for quick access in the event of a sudden downpour.

- Velcro glove holder

- Detachable zippered rain hood

- Insulated cooler pocket to maintain the temperature of hot/cold drinks.

- Multiple accessory pockets (front facing) with curved pocket openings for easier access.

- Hidden valuables pocket for the safekeeping of keys, wallet and money.

Travel covers are designed to protect your golf clubs and bag from the perils of long distance travel - many airlines recommend golfers protect their equipment with such covers. Brands such as Forgan of St. Andrews produce deluxe travel covers featuring inline wheels to provide a convenient means of transporting the golf bag from the airport to your car. This model also features extra thick padding to provide additional security during baggage handling.

The perfect addition to any golf trip is the holdall or duffle bag. These bags offer substantial storage space for golf accessories including golf shoes, clothing, gloves and golf balls. The Palm Springs Boston Bag for example provides a separate compartment with enough room to protect wet clothes or shoes from spoiling the remaining contents. This particular bag can also be customised to match your entire outfit and provides a convenient way for spotting your luggage on conveyer belt at your destination.

Golf Shag Bag - The Uses

Monday, January 26th, 2009
golf bag
Max Johnson asked:

With the short game being such important part of the game, most good amateur and professional players own and use a golf shag bag. A golf shag bag allows you to practice your short game almost anywhere as it makes practicing much easier. With a practice bag, you can practice at the golf course, in your back yard or in a local park. In addition, many of the older northern clubs do not have driving ranges but have small grassy areas to hit some smaller golf shots prior to your round of golf.

Most golf shag bags are built typically the same way. Your short game practice is made easier because all you need to do is grab the top part of the bag by the metal handle that you hold on to as you pick up your balls. Simply position the bottom of the tube on top of the ball and depress the metal or sometimes plastic tube that extends from the bag shaft over the golf ball that you would like to pick up. Once depressed, the ball will load up into the shaft and is secured without ever bending over to pick up a golf ball. The ball will keep moving up the cylinder until it falls into the bag. To recover the golf balls from the bag, simply use the zipper on the side of the bag and empty.

Players fill their golf shag bag with different types of golf balls. Some players fill their practice bags with golf balls that they have found on the golf course. Others who play at a high level go ahead and purchase new balls to use in their practice bags. This may seem a little extreme but these players want to simulate real conditions as much as possible. The other in-between option is to purchase some refurbished golf balls to fill your bag.

Golf shag bags come in a couple of different sizes however; the majority of these practice bags hold approximately 50-60 golf balls. Again, being only a couple of feet tall and having collapsible bags, a golf ball shag bag is easy to store when it is not in use. The practice golf bags can be stored in your trunk or your locker at the club. You club may agree to keep it in the club storage area in the bag room.

Another use of golf shag bags are at country clubs and resorts. Most golf courses have six to ten of these on hand at any one time. This allows their employees to pick areas that the big picker can not reach such as around the flag or near the net that runs down the edge of the driving range. In addition, a golf shag bag allows them to pick balls that are in wet areas that the picker can not run through with out getting stuck or tearing up the turf on the practice facility.

A golf shag bag makes picking up golf balls for several people. Those who want to practice their short game as well as golf course employees.

A Golf Umbrella - Great on Weddings

Sunday, January 25th, 2009
golf bag
Keith George asked:

Well, not only golfer´s can have good use of a golf umbrella. I once handed one over to the bridegroom when the sky opened as they just came out of church. The reason might not be obvious to everyone but an ordinary umbrella is too small to shelter a couple. And you can´t expect a newly married couple to separate with two umbrellas.

So golf umbrellas are bigger and the size is actually around 60-65 inches, which is just about 150-165 centimeters. Some a little smaller and you can also find some around 70 inches. Those are like having a tent, you are very well protected from rain. The big sizes of golf umbrellas are necessary as a golfer has to take care of a number of things and if possible also protect the golf bag.

If you have watched the professional golfers playing in rain you have probably also noticed that the player use big golf umbrellas. The caddie has no umbrella and on rare occasions you can see the caddie holding the umbrella for the pro. That seem to be the only time a caddie can get out of the rain. Of course it is important to protect the player, she or he is the one making money for them both.

When I was on the first tee of a golf round up in Virginia some years ago, it started to come short showers of rain. I simply had to buy a new umbrella and choose one with a dual canopy. A dual canopy has, as the name would suggest, a dual canopy design, this feature allows for any wind to blow through the umbrella while water will still run off of it. By making the top half of the bottom canopy out of a mesh material and then putting a second shell that covers the mesh and runs about two inches past the seam, the rain will not come through the vented area. This is especially important when you take into account the size of the umbrella when opened. This will easily cover you and your bag.

How is that size possible without the thing weighing a ton? With a fiberglass shaft and spreaders, the umbrella is lightweight and lightning resistant. A push button opening mechanism makes it easy to open the umbrella with one hand. Most golf umbrellas I´ve had don´t use push button techniques simply because there is one more thing that can fail. But it sure is handy.

A golf umbrella will keep you dry for a full round of golf. If it wasn´t for the fact that you have to hit the ball from time to time. You will also get wet from walking in the grass, not to talk about lost balls in the ruff! There are times when a player just have to find the ball himself.

Golf umbrellas with the double canopy works great even when the wind pickes up a little bit. You will not fly away even it the size is really big.

Some golf umbrellas now have a ergonomic handle which cut down on fatigue from carrying it. The hand stays in a natural position. Thanks to the lightweight materials used in the construction, you can carry the umbrella without having it affect your swing due to muscle fatigue.

One drawback can be mentioned with the golf umbrellas in general. The size of it, while you want to have as much of yourself and your bag covered, when closed, the umbrella will protrude a good bit from your bag when it is not being used. This can make loading and unloading the bag a little difficult from your car.

When it has been in use you should not have it in your bag. The umbrella will get dry much faster if you can have it open and just give it some time.

A golf umbrella is great for anyone to use, it is large enough for two people to stay dry. The dual canopy will keep the umbrella from turning inside out in higher winds while not sacrificing any coverage.

Choose your umbrella with care and you can have it for many years. The one I bought in Virgina is seven years now, still working great but I must admit that the looks is not the best.

I don´t care, I´m on the course to play golf.

Looking For a Good Cart Golf Bag?

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009
golf bag
Mike Schlacter asked:

Ogio Syncro Golf Bag

I love playing golf but I am beginning to find it very expensive. I started out with some second hand clubs and no bag but bought some new clothes which fitted in with the dress code of the club. As I got better I bought new clubs balls ad managed to get a second hand bag. However, as my club collection grows I find that my bag is getting to heavy to carry around and it is also getting scruffy looking. I need to get a new bag but am not sure what to get.

As everything is expensive, I want to make sure that I get a really good bag, which may cost a bit more money but that will last a long time. Something hard wearing will be best, which does everything that I need but also more, so that as my needs evolve the bag will continue to provide the service that I require.

I have been looking at all of the different types and brands. I have decided to go with a brand that I know. Many of my fellow players have recommended the Ogio bag as it is one that they have found works for them. I find that a personal recommendation is the best type and so I have been looking at what they have available. I want something that I can use on a golf cart as I have decided that lugging a heavy bag around the course is not doing my back any favors. I have managed to get access to a cart so it is just a case of getting a bag which works with one.

The Ogio Syncro Golf Bag seems to be one which will work with and without a golf cart - which is great in case I decide that I do not like the cart after all. It has lots of pockets which seems like a good idea and even a waterproof one that I can keep valuables in. I have seen it online and will go into my local shop and see if they have one so that I can have a good look at it. It looks pretty good on the website that I found it on but I always like to look at something up close before I buy it, especially if it is a more expensive purchase.

If I like it, once I have checked it out, I will read customer reviews online of the bag. I will look at a whole range as some may be biased and of course the more you look at, the wider an opinion you will get. If the reviews look mainly favorable I will look online to find out where I can get the cheapest one from.

I find this is the best way of getting a good bargain, but if you are doing this make sure that you take notice of the delivery charge as these are not always the same ad can make the difference between the cheapest and dearest available bag.

REALLY SMALL Golf Bag?

Sunday, January 18th, 2009
golf bag
dannypak123 asked:

I’m looking for a really small golf bag. I saw a man carrying this golf “bag” once and it wasn’t a pencil/sunday bag. This one tightened 5-6 clubs together with a strap at one end and has more room on the bottom for the iron heads to fit. It was more like a “tight spandex” keeping the clubs together. Anyone know where I can find this?
